Getting Sidetracked

At night while watching TV I tend to do some research to get  inspired. I like to see what other artists do. What colors they use etc.

I found a blog where somebody was explaining how to make some balls out of paper that can be used as christmas ornaments, eastereggs or just for decoration in general. I liked the idea and of course tried it first thing in the morning. I can never resist, ever. I always get sidetracked by things I like and haven't done before.

Things that look great, easy and relatively fast to make are difficult to find. I highly recommend these balls. They look very pretty.

All you need is a punch and paper, a little bit of ribbon and glue.

Don't they look cute?!

I just thought the gaps were a little bit too big for my taste. I wanted the balls to look a bit more dense. For the balls in the picture above I used 18 pieces of paper and in the picture below I used 36 pieces for the turquoise/brown one.

And as usual surrounded by my beautiful paper in the basement a thousand other ideas came through my head.

Fist idea of course was creating a flower. I starte playing with the paper and it reminded me of a fuchsia. Using an oval shaped punch helped creating petals. The question was how to glue them together. I started like this.

So after finishing the flower I wasn't happy with the petals. I tried again and gluing the paper in a different way brought me to a happy place.

Satisfied with the flower prototype I saw a necklace on my work table and the next idea was born. I used a very small punch for the circles and ta da. I have to work more on this idea but honestlyn I wanted to do totally different stuff.

One little idea transformed into a flower and an idea for jewelry making. I honestly have a love hate relationship with the internet. Anyway, I would really like to know whether it's just me or if getting sidetracked happens to you too.

I will do a tutorial for the paper balls after I have done my taxes which I'm working on right now.

Stay tuned and let me know about your "getting sidetracked issue".

Mujeres de Papel- EMOz - Zaragoza -spain

Being part of the opening was one of the most exiting experiences I've ever made. I met so many nice artists. It was just wonderful.

What I love about origami is that it has so much variety. There are many artists with completely different directions. You could find animals, figures, kusudamas, masks, flowers and much more. Take the time and watch the video from the whole exhibition. It is worth it. You'll be amazed by all the creativity.

Journey to EMOZ - diary entry 2

I was about to leave for tennis when I got a call from the school nurse. I had to pick up my son from school because he had a bad cough. The nurse suggested making an appointment with the doctor to have it checked out.

My whole morning was completely planed out and then again everything changed.

I took a deep breath and tried to adjust my work schedule in my mind.

I cancelled my intent to go on the treadmill.

I made some BottleNecklaces instead.

I tried to take some pictures but it there was not enough light – it was too cloudy.

We went to the doctor.

I made the tutorial.

I made lunch, cleaned the kitchen a little bit and that was it.

In between the afternoon activities I stated folding the calyxes.

It is 8:30 now and I know I will fall asleep after 5 minutes of watching TV.

I hope I will get more done tomorrow.

Journey to EMOZ - to the one and only museum for origami in Europe in Spain

May 20th was my mom's birthday. A special one - it was her 70th. And exactly on that day I received an email from the museum asking me if I would like to be a part in an exhibition by the end of the year.

What an amazing birthday present since I couldn't celebrate with mom.

I needed to 2 days to calm myself down. Unfortunately I was not very successful. I'm literally freaking out.

I get to submit up to 12 arrangements and they pick what they think is suitable for their exhibition. So no pressure at all.

I have tons of work to do. I just started my business that I have to maintain and now I need to create arrangements that can fulfill the honor of being displayed in a museum.

Thank god a have some arrangements at home that are presentable but it's certainly not enough. So I thought I should dedicate my blog entries talking about and showing how to create honorable flower arrangements. Let this be the journey to fun, creativity and beauty!

I will let everybody be a part of traveling to my creative mind which is often a bit chaotic. When I start creating something I have a vision but never a clear picture. I usually start with picking a color theme - which means coloring the paper. After that I start folding the blossoms. And this is where I'm at right know.

I have folded approximately 90 blossoms so far. And guess what - I even made a tutorial. My first tutorial! I didn't get the chance to edit it. It already took forever taping it. I have to say it is very difficult to fold without having my fingers in your visual way.  Honestly there is no chance for me to get everything done in a satisfying way. I can't get around my two boys. Although there are 9 and 12 years old they still need me. At least to cook dinner and for doing the laundry. I promise I will work on the editing part when I'm done with all my arrangements.

Look at the pictures. It's always the same blossom but looks totally different - this is why the blossom is called Manifold Flower.

Tomorrow I will show you how to make the calyx for this flower.

Working in the car - business as usual

Every Monday my son has soccer practice for 1 1/2 hours. It would be worth going back home but unfortunately at that time there is too much traffic. And guess how I use the time while either waiting in the car or going to Starbucks?

This morning I was holding the BottleNecklaces on top of each other and then it hit me. I always wanted to make a prom corsage but I never had an idea how to keep the flowers together. Instead of just adding one flower to the ring I thought to myself why not putting more on it. Why not using the ring as a base. In the morning I finished my first attempt. My dear friend and my kids were telling me that it might be a little bit too big.

I don't have any experience with prom corsages. Don't they come in all sizes?

Please take a minute and write what YOU think!

Made this one tonight with the flowers I finished in the car. Needs a little bit more editing. Nevertheless I think it's beautiful.

This is it. Going to bed now. I'm really tired. It was a long day.

A day filled with soccer, baseball and paper

I will tell you a little bit more about my work schedule. Today I had to go to soccer with my oldest son. We had to be there 1 hour before the game. In the morning I rushed into the basement to color and cut paper for my little red box. I also packed the flowers from yesterday to make BottleNecklaces. My car never looked so decorative.

Mostly everything I do has to fit in the busy days that my kids are having. During the week of course I have the mornings to myself and this is the time when I try to fold new things. But honestly sometimes it doesn't work because I'm so distracted with other stuff. Everybody knows working form home also has downsides. You get to look at the mess you still have to clean, the dirty laundry in the basement (at least from my work space) or you try to figure out what you're going to cook. Being creative and staying creative in not easy.

I wonder how you guys do it??? Maybe somebody can pass me a better "recipe".

Anyway I finished my task. The goal for today was to show the 3 possibilities to use the BottleNecklace. Yesterday you got to see the first one and now I'm showing you the 2 other possibilities.

FIRST BLOG - YEAH!

Tonight I am starting my blog! I Have been waiting for quite a while and I am very excited! I want to share my paper and folding experience with all of you! I thought NOW is the time! Today I was at the dentist and was happy to be able to get a lot of work done at the same time. That is one of the best things about Origami : You can take it anywhere and you can work on it at all times. I had prepared my paper and was able to fold on the way to the city and then in the waiting room. Using time productively - that was the reason I got into Origami in the first place.
